English Cream Golden Retriever Breed history

The Golden Retriever breed has its origins in the Scottish Highlands in the late 1800’s.  Dudley Marjoribanks, also known as Lord Tweedmouth, was a gentleman dedicated to the careful breeding of dogs and other cattle.

His ultimate goal in breeding dogs was to create a breed that would do well in the Scottish climate and love hunting and retrieving the local game.

In 1865, Marjoribanks found a yellow puppy in a litter of Wavy-Coated Retrievers.  The yellow color intrigued him, and he bought the puppy and
named it Nous.

Marjoribanks bred Nous to his Tweed Water Spaniel several times, and both times these litters had a few yellow puppies.  Through careful breeding, these yellow puppies were bred together as well as with the Red Setter breed.

Over time, this breeding led to the Golden Retriever.

It entered its first show in 1906 as a breed called “Retriever – Wavy or Flat Coated.”  Today, the AKC recognizes the American Golden Retriever and the BKC recognizes the English Creme Golden Retriever.

English Cream Golden Retriever Average size

Adult English Cream Golden Retrievers typically stand 20-24 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh around 55-75 pounds.

Average English Cream Golden Retriever lifespan

English Cream Golden Retrievers typically live 10-12 years.

English Cream Golden Retriever body features

Compared to the standard American Golden retriever, English Cream Golden Retrievers usually have a lighter coat in shades of cream and white.  The English Cream’s coat is also typically shorter and not as thick as the American breed, and it usually appears to have wavy fur.

Both the American and English Cream Golden Retrievers have a water-proof undercoat which allows them to well in water.

grooming Your English Cream Golden Retriever Puppy

Because of their outer coat, English Cream Golden Retrievers require regular grooming.  To keep tangles out of their coat and loose hair contained, they should be groomed daily.

English Cream Golden Retrievers should also be bathed regularly, at least once a month, so that their coat stays clean and does not have odors.  If your dog is outside a lot and often becomes dirty, then more baths are needed.

Keeping Your English Cream Golden Retriever Puppy Healthy

The Golden Retriever breed is typically healthy without a lot of excessive health problems.  However, there are several things to watch in your dog.

Due to their floppy ears and their love for the water, you need to check behind their ears to make sure they dry out properly after being wet.  To prevent infection, make sure the ears completely dry out whenever your dog becomes wet.

Like all dogs, English Cream Golden Retrievers are susceptible to hip and elbow dysplasia. Hip and elbow dysplasia occurs when the leg or hip becomes weakened, and it can result in arthritis or lameness if not addressed.

One of the best ways to prevent this is by keeping your dog from excessive running on hard surfaces.  This is especially vital when they are a puppy.

Typical English Cream Golden Retriever Allergens

With their longer outer coat, English Cream Golden Retrievers are not the best dog if allergies are a concern.  However, it is important to know what causes allergies in the first place.

Allergens are caused by dander, which is dead skin cells.  Any animal, including humans, shed these dead cells.

Because of their tendency to shed frequently, English Cream Golden Retrievers are not the most allergen-friendly dog.  Regular grooming helps reduce the allergens, but if allergens are a concern, it is always good to consult with your family physician.

If you are interested in a Golden Retriever cross breed with lower allergens, then look at our Goldendoodle puppies available for sale!
