Golden Retriever Breed history

The Golden Retriever breed has its origins in the Scottish Highlands in the late 1800s.  Dudley Marjoribanks, also known as Lord Tweedmouth, was a gentleman dedicated to the careful breeding of dogs and other cattle.

His ultimate goal in breeding dogs was to create a breed that would do well in the Scottish climate and love hunting and retrieving the local game.

In 1865, Marjoribanks found a yellow puppy in a litter of Wavy-Coated Retrievers.  The yellow color intrigued him, and he bought the puppy and named it Nous.

Marjoribanks bred Nous to his Tweed Water Spaniel several times, and both times these litters had a few yellow puppies.  Through careful breeding, these yellow puppies were bred together as well as with the Red Setter breed.

Over time, this breeding led to the Golden Retriever.

It entered its first show in 1906 as a breed called “Retriever – Wavy or Flat Coated,” and it received the official title of “Golden Retriever” in 1932 by the American Kennel Club.

A few breeds with similar characteristics to Golden Retrievers include Labrador Retrievers and Irish Setters.

Golden Retriever Average size

Adult Golden Retrievers typically stand 20-24 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh around 55-75 pounds.

Average Golden Retriever lifespan

Golden Retrievers typically live 10-12 years.

Golden Retriever body features

As their name indicates, Golden Retrievers usually have a solid-colored coat with a golden or yellow shade.  The coat’s outer layer is also shaggier and longer-haired.

grooming Your Golden Retriever Puppy

Because of their long outer coat, Golden Retrievers require regular grooming.  To keep tangles out of their coat and loose hair contained, they should be groomed daily.

Golden Retrievers should also be bathed regularly, at least once a month, so that their coat stays clean and does not have odors.  If your dog is outside a lot and often becomes dirty, then more baths are needed.

Keeping Your Golden Retriever Puppy Healthy

Golden Retrievers are typically healthy dogs without a lot of excessive health problems.  However, there are several things to watch in your dog.

Due to their floppy ears and their love for water, you need to check behind their ears to make sure they dry out properly after being wet.  To prevent infection, make sure the ears completely dry out whenever your Golden Retriever becomes wet.

Like all dogs, Golden Retrievers are susceptible to hip and elbow dysplasia. Hip and elbow dysplasia occurs when the leg or hip becomes weakened, and it can result in arthritis or lameness if not addressed.

One of the best ways to prevent this is by keeping your dog from excessive running on hard surfaces.  This is especially vital when they are a puppy.

Typical Golden Retriever Allergens

With their longer shaggy outer coat, Golden Retrievers are not the best dog if allergies are a concern. However, it is important to know what causes allergies in the first place.

Allergens are caused by dander, which is dead skin cells. Any animal, including humans, shed these dead cells.

With their long coats and frequent shedding, Golden Retrievers are not the most allergen-friendly dog. Regular grooming helps reduce the allergens, but if allergens are a concern, it is always good to consult with your family physician.

If you are interested in a Golden Retriever cross breed with lower allergens, then look at our Goldendoodle puppies for sale!

  • Can Golden Retrievers be kept inside?
Yes. They can make great indoor dogs in spite of their larger size.
  • Do Goldens make good watch dogs?
Yes, they can. It may vary between individuals, but Goldens will bark if someone comes to the door, and they can get protective if they feel their master is being threatened. Although their natural tendency is to be friendly, they can be trained to be great watch dogs.
  • Are there Miniature Golden Retrievers?
Yes! If you want a smaller Golden, there are Miniatures. They are generally the result of a Golden being crossbred with either a Cocker Spaniel or a Mini Poodle. Check out our Mini Goldendoodle puppies.
  • Do they bark a lot?
Golden Retrievers are moderate barkers. They will alert you if someone is at the door, but they are not overly vocal. However, individuals will vary.
  • What are the different colorings of Golden Retrievers?
Golden Retrievers are all at least vaguely golden. But the shades of gold can vary. Goldens can be cream, dark golden, light golden, red, or the classic plain gold.
  • What are the different types of Golden Retrievers?
There are three types of golden retrievers: English, Canadian, and American. Canadian Goldens are usually taller and thinner with darker, thinner coats. English Goldens tend to be stockier and lighter colored. American Goldens are somewhere in between. However, breeders recognize all three types simply as Golden Retrievers.
  • Are Goldens difficult to keep odors low?
Because of their longer hair, Golden Retrievers do take more work to minimize odors. The environment your Golden spends most of his time in is a large factor in determining odors, along with how often they are cleaned and bathed.

DavidI recently purchased a puppy from IVAN at Pine Crest Kennel in Gordonville, PA and I wouldn't go with another breeder in that area for a golden retriever. IVAN and his wife RACHEL made my quest to find a puppy very enjoyable as they made it an extremely smooth, honest, and easy transaction. They were very polite and answered every question I had for them. They didn't hide any information from me and when I took my puppy to the vet 2 days later the vet said we have a healthy puppy! Look forward to referring friends and family to them when looking for a golden retriever puppy! RACHEL said they have golden doodles as well.
Lori BMy family bought a Golden Retriever. He is beautiful. Infinity pups customer service was great. They were always quick getting right back to me. We had the puppy shipped.
