Cavapoos, also called Cavoodles and Cavadoodles, are a hybrid of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the Poodle. Although crossbreeds vary in personality, looks, and allergen level, Cavapoos are known to be excellent companions: easy-going, affectionate, and downright adorable!

Let go of extra stress and loneliness. Let in laughter, love, and cuddles. Find your Cavapoo puppy today, or check out some of our other breeds for sale.

Cavapoo temperament

Sociable: Both parent breeds, Poodles and Cavaliers, are outgoing, friendly breeds. Cavapoos are affectionate and playful; and will usually greet strangers warmly. They do best in settings where they receive lots of attention from their owners and can develop separation anxiety if left alone. Cavapoos are easy going and usually get along with anyone in the family – including other pets.

Fun-Loving: Cavapoos are playful and love a game of fetch or just frolicking around with children. Because Cavapoos are small, they should be supervised when playing with young children. A fall or accident could quickly injure a Cavapoo.

Affectionate: While Cavapoos love to play, they are also known to be affectionate and love a good cuddle. Cavapoos bond closely with their owners and make excellent therapy dogs.

Trainable and Intelligent: With the intelligence of a poodle and the Cavapoo’s people-pleasing nature, they are relatively easy to train. Cavapoos can learn countless commands. They also have a very sensitive (and sometimes stubborn) nature and need a gentle yet consistent hand while training.

Adaptable: Cavapoos are easy going and do well in a variety of settings, including apartments. They do well with other pets, strangers, and children; however, they don’t do well when left alone.

Alertness: While they might not have the same guarding instincts as some other breeds, Cavapoos can still exhibit alertness and a tendency to bark if they sense something unusual or if someone approaches the home.

Cuddly: Cavapoos are known for their affectionate nature. They often form strong bonds with their owners and enjoy cuddling and being close to them. Their desire for human interaction makes them excellent lap dogs and companions.

Remember that while these are common characteristics of Cavapoos, individual dogs can have their own unique personalities and traits. It’s essential to spend time with a Cavapoo puppy before bringing one into your home to ensure their temperament aligns with your lifestyle and preferences.

Cavapoo Breed history

Crossbreeds have become popular in the last few decades because of the ability to take traits from each parent breed and combine them. However, the genes each puppy receives are different, so puppies can vary in temperament, looks, size, and even shedding.

Poodles originated in Germany and were used as hunting dogs more than 400 years ago. With its elegance and intelligence, the poodle became a popular breed among the French nobles and in other parts of Europe. Its unique and showy haircut once served a practical purpose – to allow the dog to move about easily while hunting while still protecting certain parts of its body, such as the paws, chest, and head.

Toy Spaniels have been owned by nobility since Renaissance times. King Charles l and his son King Charles ll were especially known for their love of these Toy Spaniels.

Over time, the toy Spaniels were interbred with Pugs and other small breeds of Asian descent. They developed slightly different features than the original Spaniels that were bred by King Charles l and ll.

In the 1920s, an American woman, Roswell Eldrige, offered a prize to the British breeder who could create a toy Spaniel of the “old world style.” This revived spaniel breed is now called the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
In the 1990s, breeders in Australia began intentionally breeding the Cavalier King Charles Spaniels with Poodles to blend the Cavalier’s calm, sociable nature with the intelligence and low shedding of the poodle.

Although they vary somewhat in size and temperament, Cavapoos are known today as affectionate, adaptable, intelligent companions that are allergen friendly.

Cavapoos are similar to Cava Tzus and Havapoos.

Cavapoo Average size

Cavapoos height and weight vary depending on the poodle parent, but they are typically 9-14 inches tall and weigh 10- 25 pounds.

Average Cavapoo lifespan

You can expect a Cavapoo to live for 10-15 years.

Cavapoo body features

Cavapoos display a wide range of colors, coats, and sizes due to the variation in hybrid and designer dogs.

Cavapoos often have beautiful large ears similar to the Cavalier Charles Spaniel and can have large, soft eyes and round face.

Many Cavapoos have short, curly, or wavy coats, resembling a poodle; but some have smooth coats. Colors can include ruby, apricot, chocolate, black and tan, black and white, sable, or Blenheim (red and white Cavalier colors). They can be solid-colored, bi-colored, or tri-colored.

grooming Your Cavapoo Puppy

Cavapoos look best with professional grooming every 6-8 weeks.

There are a variety of coats in Cavapoos -some need to be brushed daily, while others only need to be brushed once a week. You should bathe them every 2-4 weeks.

Cavapoos also tend to have tear stains under the eyes, which can be prevented by gently washing their face every day.

Besides regular grooming, brushing, and bathing, your Cavapoo will need other basic dog care, including trimming their nails every two weeks and daily teeth brushing.

Keeping Your Cavapoo Puppy Healthy

Cavapoos can struggle with being overweight, and one of the best ways you can give your puppy good overall health is by feeding them high-quality dog food in the correct amounts.

Talk to your vet about the right amount of food for your Cavapoo puppy. Another essential part of preventing extra weight gain is regular exercise; a short walk each day is usually sufficient to keep your Cavapoo healthy.

Cavapoos are overall a very healthy breed but are susceptible to Progressive Retinal Atrophy, a degenerative eye disease that can lead to blindness in dogs.

Luxating Patella, or slipping kneecaps, is common in small dogs and crossbreeds and can occur in Cavapoos. However, surgery can help correct this.

Other conditions to be aware of are congenital heart diseases – especially mitral valve disease. This happens when there is high pressure as the left ventricle is pumping blood to the body, and may, over time, wear out the valve and begin to leak. Your vet can listen for heart murmurs to detect this condition in your Cavapoo.

Like all dog breeds, they are susceptible to hip and elbow dysplasia, two of the most common health issues among dogs.

Hip and elbow dysplasia occurs when the leg or hip becomes weakened, and it can result in arthritis or potential lameness if not addressed.

One of the best ways to prevent this is by keeping your dog from too much running on hard surfaces, especially when they are puppies.

Typical Cavapoo Allergens

Allergens are caused by dander, which is dead skin cells. Both animals and humans shed these skin cells.

Cavapoos are considered hypoallergenic, which means they are low-shedding dogs and often do not aggravate allergies as much as non-hypoallergenic dogs.

However, If you have someone in your home with animal allergy concerns, please consult your family physician.

  • Are Cavapoos stubborn?
Cavapoos can have a stubborn streak, yes. Like all dogs, they need to know who their boss is. You should begin training your Cavapoo when he is young for the best results.
  • Can Cavapoos be kept outside?
Cavapoos don’t thrive outside for several reasons: They are social companion dogs who don’t like to be alone, they are sensitive to heat, and they are sensitive to cold. Cavapoos do better as inside dogs than outside dogs.
  • Do I need to clip my Cavapoo?
Cavapoos don’t constantly need high maintenance trims. But it’s best if you trim them up a little now and then, especially around the face and genital areas. They look best if you get them professionally groomed every few months.
  • Are Cavapoos yappy?
Cavapoos are not excessive barkers, but they may bark some. They may bark if someone is at the door, or if they are lonely, alarmed, or anxious. Cavapoos sometimes suffer from separation anxiety, so you can expect them to bark if they are left alone. If your Cavapoo barks excessively, a little training can remedy the problem.
  • Do Cavapoos wander off if left to themselves?
Cavapoos are generally inside dogs, so you probably won’t have to worry about your Cavapoo wandering off. Also, they love to be with people, so they won’t generally wander too far. That said, you should watch your Cavapoo or put him on a leash when you are outside. All dogs have the potential to wander off if something catches their interest.
  • Are Cavapoos hard to train?
Cavapoos do have a stubborn streak. But they are intelligent and eager to please, and they should be fairly easy to train. They may have bad days, but they will probably enjoy the interaction of training sessions most of the time.
  • Do Cavapoos get injured easily?
Cavapoos are small dogs, so they can be fragile, especially when they are puppies. Always supervise children when they are playing with your Cavapoo puppy, as they could get over excited and hurt your Cavapoo.
  • Do Cavapoos ever get aggressive?
Cavapoos are a cross between two non-aggressive breeds, and they are not aggressive dogs. That said, they may get aggressive if they feel threatened. Early socialization will help prevent this.
  • Are Cavapoos destructive?
Your Cavapoo may get lonely and anxious if you leave him alone for too long. If this happens, your Cavapoo may get destructive. It’s best to crate train your Cavapoo for when you are away.

Alisa WinterGot our cavapoo Ruth in February of 2017 and it was the best decision we’ve ever made! I have passed along the site to a few friends who have also used infinity pups for their doggos and have had amazing experiences. Trying to convince the husband for a second cavapoo
NicoleI live in California and was looking specifically for Cavapoos. There are very few breeders locally and I was a bit hesitant to buy from across the country without meeting or interacting with the puppy and breeder. I picked Otis (formerly Gordon, breeder is Mary) up at the airport only a few days after speaking with Infinity Pups and he is amazing! It's been 3 weeks and he is very loving/cuddly, playful and most surprisingly for a puppy- well behaved! Knock on wood but he has taken quickly to potty training, is friendly to other people and dogs, only whines when he needs to go to the bathroom, and seemingly gets what are his toys and what are not. I can tell the breeder did a wonderful job with him in his first 9 weeks of life and we are so grateful for her and for Otis!
Dagyanamai I.We have a new member of our family Lulu a Cavapoo thanks to you, She is adorable, loving, playful, and has the most beautiful face.
